Dock workers have been pushing for a container port to the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbour for years, saying the maritime industry would bring more jobs than the original plan for housing and commercial development, Euclid Infotech reported.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced earlier in the
week that it will buy and expand the 98-acre Global Terminal site, which
will be used to handle cargo growth.
In addition, the Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority voted 6-0 to sell
the Port Authority a third of the former Military Ocean Terminal at
Bayonne. Bayonne will receive US$235 million spread over 24 years for
130 acres of the Peninsula and 98.9 acres underwater, according to the
Port Authority. The purchase includes permanent roadway easements to
ensure access to the site.
