Captain Subhash Kumar’s first act as the new chairman of the Chennai Port Trust has been to take on a flash strike by 500-600 workers that has brought iron ore handing at the port to a standstill. Speaking exclusively to Seatrade Asia Online,
a CPT spokesperson confirmed that Kumar, who previously held the title
of deputy chairman at the port, took over the new role from previous
chairman K Suresh only this morning.
Local media have attributed the flash strike to a break down in talks
yesterday between CRT authorities and worker unions regarding
promotions for the workers. According to the Business Standard, Kumar
has termed the strike illegal and insisted that the situation can only
be resolved if the unions re-enter talks.
