China fully supports Indonesia in its efforts to create security in the Strait of Malacca especially for national and international shipping.
"We support Indonesia in its efforts to create peace by eradicating pirates in the Malacca Strait,"
Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here on Wednesday.
He made the statement during a meeting with Indonesian Foreign Minister
Hassan Wirajuda before the signing of a cooperation agreement on
extradition.
Yang said security in the Malacca Strait was very important for
international shipping and therefore China hoped Indonesia could create
it.
He said the Chinese government had called for and was ready to make
joint security efforts with Indonesia in the strait, if needed.
"We respect the important role of Indonesia in creating shipping security in the Malacca Strait very much," he said.
In response, Wirajuda expressed appreciation to the Chinese support with regard to security in the strait.
Indonesia, he said, with all its capacity had continued making efforts to assure security in the strait.
"Some time ago several countries also expressed their wish to help
Indonesia in maintaining security in the Malacca Strait but we rejected
it," he said.
He said Indonesia considered the strait strategic and important and therefore it had always striven to ensure its security.
