By 2009, it is planned to build two cargo ports in Sochi. The project valued at RUR 3 billion is to raise marine cargo inflow to Sochi by 300%. The ports are to handle 11 million tonnes per year, which is 600 wagons per day, Dp.Ru informs. As of today, only 150 wagons are handled in the port of Sochi. The construction will commence in 2008 and to be finished in 2009. The existing port will be used exclusively for passengers. After construction of the facilities it will be able to handle up to ten large ocean liners. The new ports may also be converted into passenger ports after Olympic Games 2014. The financing is most likely to be arranged in the form of PPP. Negotiations are already being carried out with investors and a tender is to be held in the nearest future. There is information that Basic Element is to participate in competition.Besides cargo ports it is planned to build a cargo terminal to handle railway trains. RF Transport Ministry proposed the Ministry of Economic Development that RUR 8.5 billion should be invested into development of Sochi port infrastructure.
