GK_Vasan_photo_01The Nagapattinam Chamber of commerce has appealed to the Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan to take steps for modernising the Nagapattinam Port and also to commence

passenger ferry services to Singapore and Malaysia.
The Nagapattinam port, which was once a flourishing one, fell into disuse in the 90s and it was badly affected by the tsunami in 2004.
The Asian Development Bank came forward to reconstruct the port.
Several activities such as reconstruction of the wharf and relaying of the port road, were taken up at a cost of Rs 48 crore and the port became active again.
The District Chamber of Commerce feels that the port requires state-of-the-art facilities to become competitive.
"The Estuary should be deepened to a depth of 6 m so that small ships could enter the port premises itself for cargo handling. The facilities in the port should be enhanced to international standards through private participation," Chamber President Chandrasekaran said.
A delegation led by Chandrasekaran had met Vasan at Chennai recently and apprised him about the need for modernising the port. They had also appealed to the Minister to give shape to the proposal to commence passenger ferry to Singapore and Malaysia from Nagapattinam,he added.
